How IP Location Works (and Why It's Always Approximate)

IP-based location works by matching an IP address to a general region. Regional internet registries maintain databases of which IP address blocks belong to which ISPs, and ISPs report which regions those blocks serve. When you look up an IP, the tool is essentially querying: "this address belongs to this provider, which operates in this area." It's not GPS. It's a database lookup.

IP geolocation gets you to city level reliably in most cases. Sometimes less precisely, depending on how the ISP allocates addresses. The reason it can't be more accurate is baked into how IP addressing works: ISPs own blocks of addresses that cover large regions, and they hand those addresses out to customers across wide areas. A single block might cover an entire state. The database knows which provider owns the block and roughly where they operate. It doesn't know which specific building each address is assigned to.

This isn't a limitation of any particular tool — it's how IP geolocation has worked since the early internet, and it's unlikely to change. The mapping between IPs and physical locations exists for network management, not for pinpointing individual users.

VPN, Mobile, and Datacenter Connections

If you're using a VPN, the IP lookup shows the VPN server's location, not yours. That's how VPNs work — your traffic exits from the VPN server's IP address, and every service you visit sees that address instead of your real one. A VPN set to Amsterdam shows Amsterdam, whether you're actually in Berlin or Bangkok.

Mobile carriers introduce similar confusion. Carriers often route traffic through central gateways that can be in a different city or even a different state from where the phone is. Your phone might be in a suburb of Dallas, but the carrier's gateway is in Houston. The IP lookup says Houston. You're in Dallas. The IP tells you about the network path, not the physical device.

VPN Verification

VPN verification — confirming that your VPN is actually routing through the country it claims to. VPN providers aren't always honest — or accurate. A server labeled "Germany" might actually be in the Netherlands because the German endpoint went down and traffic got rerouted.

Security awareness

Seeing what a website's server logs would infer about you from a single HTTP request. Every request includes your public IP. The server on the other end can use that to look up your approximate location, ISP, and connection type. This tool shows you the same information any website could determine about you, before any cookies or JavaScript come into play.

Connection Type Detection

The tool flags whether your connection looks like a VPN, proxy, mobile carrier, or datacenter based on patterns in the IP and associated metadata. VPN and datacenter IPs tend to belong to known ranges registered to hosting providers. Mobile carrier IPs have characteristics that distinguish them from fixed-line connections. Proxy connections sometimes show up through specific IP ranges or header signatures.

IPv4 and IPv6

The tool shows both IPv4 and IPv6 if your connection supports it. Most modern networks have IPv6, but it's often half-implemented — enabled but broken in ways that cause intermittent issues you can't easily trace. If only your IPv4 shows up, your ISP probably hasn't rolled out IPv6 yet, or your router has it disabled. Either way, seeing both addresses tells you whether your dual-stack setup is actually working.

Privacy — How This Tool Is Different

Every other tool on this site runs entirely in your browser. Nothing leaves your machine. The IP lookup is the one exception, because your public IP only exists in the context of a network request — you can't check "what's my public IP" without making one, since your public IP is literally the address a remote server sees when your browser connects.

The request goes directly from your browser to the lookup service. It doesn't pass through or get stored by this site. The lookup service sees your IP — it has to, that's the point — but the site itself never sees or stores it. There's no intermediary step, no logging on our end, no database of who looked up what.

This transparency matters. If the site claimed everything runs locally while quietly making an external request, that would be a breach of trust. Instead, the tool is upfront: this one operation requires a network request. The privacy policy explains exactly how it's handled. If you're comfortable with that tradeoff — your IP goes to one lookup service in exchange for learning what it reveals — the tool gives you useful information with full disclosure. If you're not, every other tool on the site remains fully local with zero external requests.
