Where These Actually Get Used

QR codes show up everywhere once you start looking. Yet, as soon as you start to recognise them you’re unable to avoid. They’re on an ad, or a business card, for example, and take you to some page online or a portfolio of some description – after all you wouldn’t imagine that someone’s going to have the patience to tap “example.com/portfolio/case-studies/2024” into a tiny smartphone screen and take on auto-correcting for their lives when a quick two second scan does it all. Dropped into a presentation slide or product packaging as a quick scannable shortcut to more information than fits on the physical space available. A conference badge with a QR code linking to your LinkedIn. A product label with a QR code pointing to setup instructions or a registration page

Getting a Code That Actually Scans Reliably

QR codes have built-in error tolerance as part of their design — a portion of the code can be damaged or obscured and it'll still scan correctly — but real-world scan reliability comes down heavily to print size and contrast in practice.

If you're printing codes on business cards, 2.5×2.5 cm is a comfortable minimum that scans reliably in most conditions. If you're printing on a poster or banner, go bigger — not because the scanner needs it, but because the viewing distance increases, and someone scanning from a foot away needs the code to be large enough for their camera to lock onto it quickly.

Contrast matters more than size in a lot of cases. A dark code on a light, plain background scans reliably every time. A dark code on a busy image background, or a light code on a medium-gray background, fails constantly. The scanner needs to distinguish the black modules from the white ones, and anything that blurs that distinction — busy backgrounds, low contrast, glare on a glossy surface — makes scanning unreliable.

Color combinations matter more than most people expect. Black on white is ideal. Dark blue on white works. Dark green on white works. For example if you decide to use custom colors in your qr code design as part of branding, print out your qr code at full size and then try reading it with a few different phones before going to a large print order.

Placement on the physical material matters too. A QR code on a vertical banner at a conference that's six feet tall and viewed from three feet away is going to have problems — the angle is too steep and the code is too far from the camera for reliable scanning. A QR code on a flat table tent or a horizontal card, viewed from a comfortable distance at a natural angle, scans much more reliably. Think about how someone would physically hold their phone relative to the code, and place it accordingly. Codes on surfaces that reflect light — glossy posters, glass, metallic finishes — can create glare that washes out the code. Matte finishes scan more reliably in varied lighting.

If you're printing QR codes as part of a larger design, give them breathing room. The white border around a QR code — called the "quiet zone" — isn't decorative.

Static vs. Dynamic Codes

Static vs Dynamic QR Codes The codes generated by this tool are “static” – in other words, what they encode is exactly the data that you pass into them, nothing else. This is in contrast with “dynamic” codes which encode a short URL that points to your final destination via some sort of tracking service. Static codes are the simpler and more reliable option.

What you encode is what is scanned. There’s no redirect to potentially fail, no third party to go offline, and no expiration date to eventually concern yourself about. For instance, a static code that encodes https://www.example.com will always link to that exact website as long as the website is live. The QR code itself just contains a visual representation of that text without a behind-the-scenes service to make it work. A dynamic code, on the other hand, contains an encoded short URL (like qrco.de/abc123) that then redirects to the website you want the user to visit.

The redirecting service that provides these short URLs is responsible for determining the ultimate destination of the user, which offers you the benefit of being able to change the ultimate destination after the code is created - helpful if you are using a code that can not be easily updated like one that you are printing on packaging.

The disadvantage to this, however, is that the code will no longer work if the redirection service is offline. In most cases for the average user and business, static QR codes make a better option because the need to dynamically update a printed code after the fact generally doesn’t arise.

Does It Expire?

No. The code generated here encodes exactly what you gave it, directly, at the moment you created it — it's a static code, not a redirect through some third-party shortening service that could go down or change later. It'll keep working indefinitely, for as long as whatever it points to — a URL, a Wi-Fi network's actual credentials — hasn't changed on your end since you generated it.

There's no account required, no subscription, no service maintaining the code on your behalf. The code is just data encoded as a pattern of black and white squares. Once you download it, it's yours.You can print it, use it in your apps, embed it, it’s self contained and works without an internet connection, it’s not relying on me having this tool around in future, even if this site vanished tomorrow, any QR code already generated would still work fine!

What You Can Encode

The utility supports URLs, simple text, email addresses, telephone numbers, and wi-fi credentials. In the case of Wi-Fi codes you just have to specify the name of the network, password and security type (WPA, WPA2, WEP or open) to produce the corresponding code. The majority of recent telephones recognise it as a wi-fi credential and propose to access the network. Plain text encoding is useful for anything that doesn't fit the other categories — a promo code, a short message, a set of instructions, a vCard with contact details. Whatever you type in gets encoded exactly as written, character for character.
